The Self-Clean Door Lock and Why It Stays Shut

How the latch works
On Viking’s VGSC freestanding gas self-clean ranges, a small motor turns a cam that draws a lever into the locked position, and micro switches tell the self-clean control the door is secure before the clean carries on. A cooling fan keeps the lock motor and its wiring cool through the cycle, which is why a fan should be heard during every clean. On those ranges a thermostat also switches the lock motor circuit out above about 575°F, so the latch cannot be driven open at cleaning heat. Built-in wall ovens use their own lock assemblies.
Two opposite faults
It will not latch. Rule out a door not fully closed; after that it is the motor, the cam or a switch.
It will not let go. The motor stopped part-way or a switch stopped reporting. Allow the full cooling time with the controls off and check the breaker once. The Field Note on a dead display or locked door after a clean explains each combination.

- How long after a clean should the latch still be holding?
- About half an hour past the end of the cycle. Viking's manuals allow roughly thirty minutes of cooling after the three-and-a-half-hour clean, because the cavity is still far hotter than baking heat and the latch releases only at a safe temperature.
